Barcelona secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Athletic Club in their first home game of the La Liga season, giving Hansi Flick a successful debut.
The match at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys started cautiously, with few clear chances, until Barcelona’s young talent, Lamine Yamal, opened the scoring.
Yamal, playing against a friend’s team, curled in a superb shot to give the Catalans the lead, marking his first goal of the season.
However, Athletic Club responded before halftime, with Oihan Sancet calmly converting a penalty to equalize.
Although Yamal’s goal was a highlight, it was Robert Lewandowski who ultimately secured the win.
After halftime, Barcelona looked stronger, with Lewandowski pushing the attack. He had a header hit the post and was twice stopped by Athletic’s goalkeeper Alex Padilla.
But just when it seemed Lewandowski might be thwarted for the night, he struck the decisive goal in the final moments.
This was Lewandowski’s second consecutive match-winning goal, following his last-minute strike against Valencia.
The win keeps Barcelona’s perfect start to the 2024/25 season intact, as they prepare to face Rayo Vallecano next weekend.
